People always say that bad things happen at night. I believe Elie Wiesel called his Holocaust memoir, Night because Wiesel uses foreshadowing and symbolization of bad things with the name Night. Throughout the book, we see how Wiesel mentions the physical and symbolic darkness of night, right before something terrible happens. For example, in chapter 7 pgs 98-103, when Night symbolization as it relates to the author’s experiences. This happens when the car stops in a field and SS soldiers shout at the people in the cars to throw out their dead.
Elie Wiesel’s “Night” depicts death, obliteration, and anguish while directly depicting the suffering he witnessed during his time at Auschwitz, a concentration camp for Jews during World War II. Within the story, there is an overwhelming amount of times the Jews had been in distress. Many children had been separated from their parents and all of the Jews were taken from their homes. Their suffering seemed endless. They were no longer teachers, homeowners, or priests.
The central theme of Night by Elie Wiesel is the dehumanization and loss of faith in humanity during the Holocaust. The memoir illustrates the atrocities committed against Jews, including forced labor and executions in concentration camps. Eliezer and his father are subjected to severe physical torture, hunger, and disease throughout the course of the book while living under Nazi rule. As they struggled to survive, they witnessed unspeakable acts of violence against the other individuals in the camp which dehumanized and degraded them. Eliezer and other Night characters change as a result of these experiences, like losing faith in God and beginning to doubt the existence of humanity.

The book he wrote explains his point of view of what had happened during the Holocaust. During Chapter 3 of the book is when Elie and his father begin to experience multiple representations of dehumanization of the Jewish prisoners in the Nazi concentration camps. The way they feel dehumanized affects their identity and sense of self.
The element of symbolism is so strong and predominant in the novel “Night,” we are able to delve deeper into the heinous experiences the Jews were subjected to during the Holocaust. There is no sure way to empathize with the victims of the Holocaust, but survivor Elie Wiesel opens the eyes of the reader to so many encounters that the Jews had to face in order to survive. Wiesel was able to portray individual emotions while using tangible objects or acts. Elie’s father, the march of the Jews, and the fire in the story all represent a deeper interpretation of themselves.
