Hamlet’s relationship with Ophelia In the play Hamlet, there are some things that hint that Hamlet does not love Ophelia, but there are more things that prove that he really does love her. Hamlet’s love for Ophelia is a little deceiving throughout the play but he admittingly says that he loves her and there are signs that prove it. Also, throughout the story Ophelia has many problems and troubles that make her life a lot more complicated. All of these problems cause her to kill herself but who is to blame for her death? Also, Ophelia’s madness has a significance because she is just an innocent girl that gets all of these horrible things put on her which adds a twist to the story and adds some drama. As soon as Ophelia found out that her father was dead she took it to heart and became very depressed. She expressed her mourning by going seemingly going mad. She started acting crazy and singing lines from songs and poems. For example, while the queen is talking to a gentleman about Ophelia he says “ She is importunate, Indeed distract. Her mood will needs be pitied (Act 4 Scene 4, lines 2-3).” This shows that the others are noticing that she is going mad over her father’s death. Another example is when Ophelia is responding to the Queen asking how she was and says “ How could I your true love know, From another one? By his cockle hat and staff and his sandal shoon (Act 4 Scene 5, lines 25-28). ” In this quote she is saying she doesn’t know how she feels because she is still somewhat numb from her father’s death but she is still going mad over it and has mixed feelings. Ophelia gets a lot put on her in this part of the play and she seems to just lose it and decides that death is the easier route rather than to stay alive and deal with her father’s
