Kate Chopin, The author of the short story ,”Desiree’s Baby’ works hard to create a sense of suspense around the revelation of the mystery about the origins of the baby’s strange color. The reader is kept guessing for most of the story, and even when he or she believes that the answer is clear, a twist occurs just as the story ends. Write an essay in which you defend or contest Chopin’s particular use of suspense in this story. Analyze whether this technique was effective in maintaining the reader’s interest and developing higher stakes for the outcome. Those possessions are Desiree’s and the baby’s reason being he is burning them is to show that he’s trying to erase their memory. This symbolizes that he was erasing his memory of Desiree and the baby because they were a threat to his reputation. He also threw letters erasing a part of himself as well as the letter containing his african descent. The last symbol analyzed was on the scene “When she reached L’Abri she shuddered at the first sight of it, as she always did,”(Chopin 3). From the descriptions of L’Abri, one can infer that it symbolizes Armand’s dark mood or behavior also can show he’s hiding something because L’abri is so mysterious. The secret is later then revealed at the end of the story. As we know the theme of this story is Racism. It is clear that Racism is the start of all the problems. Racism is a belief that inherent differences among the various cultures between the two races, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is most superior than the other. Being racist never helped anyone and almost always leads to violence. Although racism and slavery were major problems back then. Another literary device used was conflict.
