Have you ever judged someone before you got to know them, only to find out that you were wrong? To Kill a Mockingbird by American Novelist Harper Lee is a controversial and amazingly crafted novel. To Kill a Mockingbird is about a young girl called Scout and the challenges she faces throughout life due to her dad defending a black man during racist times. In chapter 10, Harper Lee uses conflict, character, and setting to show that anyone can be a hero and a hero can evolve from anywhere or anything. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee presents the conflict of a “mad dog” that everyone is attempting to stay away from until the sheriff arrives. In the novel, Lee states, “The rifles cracked. Jem tells Scout, “ ‘d you see him, Scout? ‘d you see him just standin’ there? . . . ‘n’ all of a sudden he just relaxed all over, an’ it looked like that gun was a part of him. . . an’ he did it so quick, like. . . I hafta aim for ten minutes ‘fore I can hit something’. . . .’” (Lee, 111). As you can see, Jem is very surprised by Atticus’s actions because he’s never seen him do that before and Atticus never told him that he could do it. Miss Maudie says to Scout, “‘Well now, Miss Jean Louise’ she said, ‘still think your father can’t do anything? Still ashamed of him?’ ” and Jem replies, “ ‘Nome,’ ” (Lee, 111). This situation has completely changed how Jem views Atticus.
