1128 Words5 Pages

There has been an abundance of extravagant writers throughout time. One of the best writers to ever live would have to be Mark Twain. He incorporated humor in his writing to entertain his audience while he still told a story. Three ways Mark Twain was able to use humor in A Tramp Abroad to tell his story are through First Person POV, humor in the plot, and use of exaggeration. The opening reason for how Mark Twain used humor in chapter XII was his plan to use a first person narration. This narration technique was good for his book because it lets the reader feel for the person telling the story. A good example of this is when the narrator was attempting to fall asleep and he ended up saying “My mind got a start by and by, and began to consider …show more content…

Adding humor to the plot can also add suspense and pull the reader into the story. Adding humor to dramatic parts can add relief and make the audience laugh which Twain does very often. One quote that shows humor in the plot is “So I presently hurled a shoe at random, and with a vicious vigor. It struck the wall over Harris's head and fell down on him; I had not imagined I could throw so far” (Twain 72). This adds to the plot because, suspense is building up to the point until he is finally angry enough to throw the shoe has hard as he possibly could. It adds humor as well because, he adds in jokes such as him saying he was unaware he could throw that far. When the audience goes to picture this moment it shows humor, because they imagine a man sleeping and who is suddenly awoken by a shoe falling directly on his face. Mark Twain’s humor started at an early age, although he was often sick until the age of 10 his mother had given him a good sense of humor. David Zmijewski tells us how mark twain was using humor with the news paper at an early age through this quote “Twain left school after the fifth grade to become a printer's apprentice. In 1851, he began working as a typesetter, contributing articles and humorous sketches to the Hannibal Journal, a newspaper.” (Zmijewski 54). Another line that has humor in the plot is “There was only one sofa; it was …show more content…

Using this technique helps to give the reader a better idea of the narrator going crazy and emphasizes important details. One example of this in the story is “started to get up, and knocked down an umbrella; it made a noise like a pistol-shot when it struck that hard, slick, carpetless floor; I grated my teeth and held my breath--Harris did not stir” (Twain 74). This part exaggerates the sound the umbrella made to give the reader a better idea that it was a really loud fall in the silent night. It also gives the audience something to laugh at as he struggles to remain quiet, but was unable to do so. Another example of exaggeration is “I close-reefed my ears--that is to say, I bent the flaps of them down and furled them into five or six folds, and pressed them against the hearing-orifice- but it did no good: the faculty was so sharpened by nervous excitement that it was become a microphone and could hear through the overlays without trouble” (Twain 72). Twain does this to help the reader understand that the mouse was very loud and there was no way for the narrator to drown out the sound. This is another moment of humor for the audience as the narrator freaks out and struggles to ignore this mouse’s gnawing, the audience is laughing at the hardships he goes through in order to try and sleep. Twain uses these moments of exaggeration to go in more detail on small situations to add humor to
