“Power is the ability to do something or act in a particular way, especially as a faculty or quality” (Google definition). A leader’s power can affect the well-being of the community and this power could be used in a good or a bad way such as dictatorship. In North Korea, Kim Jong-un abuses his power of being a leader by forcing brutal labor among the people of North Korea which has caused death and starvation. In the novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell, Napoleon uses his power as a leader when he manipulate others, enforces hard labor, and benefits himself and the other pigs which all affect the other animals’ well beings. For example, Orwell writes, “Napoleon took them away from their mothers, saying that he would make himself responsible for their education” (30). This is significant because not only did Napoleon manipulate the mothers into giving him their children but it is later revealed that he actually trained the pups to be his bodyguards. This affects the animals (which is the community) because the dogs are used as threats to the animals to scare them to not question Napoleon which benefits him because that will help him stay in power longer. Orwell also states, “About this time, too, it was laid down as a rule that when a pig and any other animal met on the path, the other animal must stand aside: and also that all pigs, of whatever degree, were to have the privilege of wearing green ribbons on their tails on Sundays” (99). This is significant because Napoleon abuses his powers to benefit his own species by prioritizing them over the other animals. This affects the other animals (which is the community) because they are often left starving while the pigs take meals that include sugar or alcohol inside the farmhouse and the animals have to put the pigs well-being first because they are threatened by the dogs, food being rationed, and the thought of Jones coming back. This shows how a leader’s use of power can affect the well-being of the community when it is used to benefit the
