2. The Netflix series 60 Days In does a good job of displaying the harsh realities of our modern-day prison system. Sheriff Mark Lambs takes seven ordinary, and innocent people and places them in confined, violent, and dangerous property in hopes of bettering the system. Based on their skills, pasts, and beliefs, the participants are given 60 days to learn about the task assigned to them. Season five uncovers the problems of drugs, gangs, and prison operations. “60 Days In” gives us a close enough look at the Pinal County Jail that many of these issues are obvious to us. One example of a systemic issue is the racial influence in the prison. When an individual arrives in prison, the group or “gang” you will be in depends on the race you are. Specifically for men in prison, your race is one of the most important things. When the participants arrive, the other inmates of their ethnicity help them with their beds and try to get to know them as they will be “buddying up.” From then on, gangs do everything together and it is even thought of as weird if you interact too much with other gangs. The gang is the group of people you get haircuts with, watch TV with, eat with, and live with. The leader of each gang is generally decided based on who has been in prison the longest. The other inmates in the gang allow their leader to boss them around and sort of disrespect them, likely out of fear. This is a huge problem because all it does is add conflict and dispute between groups.
