In Edgar Allan Poe’s story, “The Pit and the Pendulum” Poe, uses the horror elements of suspense, plot twist, and explores violent side of humanity. This story is about a guy trying to be executed, but finds clever ways not to. First, it has suspense. One way he shows suspense, “I reached out my hand and it fell heavily upon something damp and hard.”(Poe 3) Second, it has a plot twist near the end, “The fearful difference quickly increased with a low rumbling or moaning sound.”(Poe 12) The walls are folding in on him. Lastly, it explores the violent side of humanity, “It swept so closely over me as to fan me with its acrid breath.”(Poe 8) Poe is talking about a sharp piece of metal swaying back and forth near his face ready to kill him.
