Loyalty. Leadership. Inspiration. Using ethos, pathos, and logos Shakespeare is portraying inspiration in the play “Henry V” as well as leadership and loyalty. Henry uses ethos to show his warriors how to fight, he uses pathos to play on their emotions and shape them to do what he needs them to, and he uses logos to provide step-by-step directions for everything they are going to do during the war.
Firstly, Shakespeare uses ethos in the play “Henry V” to show examples of leadership during 1599. The entire speech employs ethos because Henry is the king and a warfare expert. His speech shows his skills at waging battle and encouraging his troops (Shakespeare). Furthermore, Shakespeare’s “Henry V,” says “Then lend the eye a terrible aspect.” Henry V helps encourage his warriors to do better in the battle by delivering this speech and giving them hope of return. Proving that Shakespeare uses ethos by using the character “Henry V” using Henry’s authority to help encourage the soldiers to risk their lives for their country. Henry also goes into battle with them risking his own life being a good hero and showing these soldiers what a real leader does. Additionally, Shakespeare uses pathos in the play “Henry V” in addition to using ethos.
