Social Media is websites and applications that allow users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. There are many different social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Tumblr, Instagram and Bing. The disruptive potential of social media in provoking participation and networking has been willingly exploited by marketers and politicians. The power of these digital networks can be used by individuals and groups for excellent causes, also to have a positive impact on the society. Social media platforms are beginning to be used by citizens for promoting social causes, creating community engagement to answer society’s needs.

Firstly what actually is gender development? In all societies men and women play different roles, face different constrains and have different needs. Gender development influences this type of segregation and I feel like this is an important feature of people’s lives as it can be seen every day in our lives. For example when a baby is born they are already introduced to gender stereotypes. Baby girls are dressed in pink clothes as for the boys their encouraged to wear blue. As they get older girls are expected to be playing with dolls and the boys with cars. Gender identity is how individuals perceive themselves. When someone comes to say “I am a man” or “I am a woman”. A person’s gender identity can be the same or it can be different than the sex ascribed to them at birth. It is perfectly possible, and common to believe that one is a woman while having all the biological sex characteristics of a male. Fausto-Sterling (1993) explains that males and females are not enough to describe the several sexes and types of gender that exist in the world today. Many people are not aware of this but there are 3 gender specific types in this day and age. Male and Female which we already know, and Intersex. Hermaphrodites which can be produced by a hormone imbalance before birth. Hermaphrodites have one testis and one ovary (the sperm- and egg- producing vessels, or gonads); the male pseudo-hermaphrodites, have testes and some features of the female genitalia but no ovaries. The female pseudo-hermaphrodites, have ovaries and some features of the male genitalia but do not have testes. Because our culture is uneasy about sexual ambiguity, most people are confused about hermaphrodites. Social media platforms can be very beneficial for Hermaphrodites. Anderson (2012) suggests that hermaphrodites can research this type of gender on social media websites and find useful information.
