Sexuality and gender are often confused in society. Women and men have biological differences; from these differences societal establishments are created within a community, culture, and or race.
In the article “Dude, Where’s Your Face?”, Brandon Miller presents a study in which the social networking profiles of male homosexuals represent themselves and how they depict partner preferences. Many confuse the terms sex and gender. Sex refers to physical, psychological, and biological characteristics whereas gender are behaviors learned from cultural expectations that distinguish women and men (Benokraitis 159). These terms lead us to sexual orientation which is partner preference. For instance, a desire of the same sex, opposite sex, or neither . In this article, Brandon Miller focuses on homosexual (those who are attracted to the same sex) men. The ignorance of society affects those individual who are categorized in sexual orientations. Furthermore, the confusion of the terms in society and the men acknowledging it, their sexual identity is questioned. Some mask their characteristics while other are open to their identity and express it online. Physical characteristics are more important for homosexual men than internal characteristics which leads to the behavior exhibited and language used in personal ads for self representation. In my opinion I feel like society should stop determining how a women or male should express themselves to feel accepted. In relation to social network sites, men should focus more on the real representation of themselves because if someone really likes you, they will like you for who you are not for who you pretend to be.
