“What is a Homosexual?” written by Andrew Sullivan was a powerful article for me for the simple fact that, I have many homosexual friends and growing up with them and watching their struggle to fit in was extremely painful, heartbreaking but and the same time I am the lucky one that they chose to be themselves around. Andrews describes in his article what it was like to be the fifteen-year-old boy in the locker room and realizing for the first time that he is attracted to boys and he had to learn how to conceal how he was feeling in front of his peers. Andrews states, that the first homosexual lesson: that your survival depends upon self-concealment. Andrews Article focus on what it is like growing up in a heterosexual world as a homosexual teenager and how homosexuals learn at a young age how to conceal their sexuality.

This conception of entertainment progressively changed as the audience of series was looking for a more realistic approach of our society in television programs. It is in this context that “Shameless” was created. This TV show offered to the general public a modern approach to the working class family and decided to talk to about homosexuality in a context that had rarely been seen before. Some might say that this theme could also be found in the TV show “Modern Family”, but as this show is based on the crazy and unrealistic adventures of the protagonists, the homosexual characters seem unrealistic as well. Thus, even if it might not have been the purpose of the creators, the exaggerated personality traits of the characters forces the show to keep the old stereotypes when developing the personality of its homosexual characters.

The theme of societal acceptance in the LGBTQ community is a constant struggle to find. Conservative members of society have continued to reiterate the “heterosexual” idea of relationship. They use phrases like “It is just a phase” or “God doesn’t condone this”. In the excerpt from, “The Body Lies: Female-to-Male Transsexuals” author Amy Bloom writes about how important changing physical biological parts to match how they feel inside. Bloom conveys her supporting argument for transsexuals through showcasing Lyle’s experience and to shine a light on how medical procedures can affect someone mentally through both sides of the transsexual debate.
Furthermore, studies show that three-quarters of gay and transgender people feel they need to lie about their gender or sexual identity, according to a survey commissioned by charity Pride in London (Sharkov, 2016). LGBT community members feel they have to hide their sexulty inorder to fit in with their peers. It takes a lot of trust and courage for some to come forth about their sexuality. It is especially hard for LGBT athletes to express thier sexualty because they are constantly in the public's eye. They may fear what the public’s reaction will be and how it will affect their athletic career.

Due lack of knowledge related to LGBTQ issues, we often approach situations in a wrong manner and one small ignorant mistake can embarrass them. Everyone should be very considerate in dealing with transgender people pay necessary attention on their pronouns and how they wanted to be perceived.
