She must show her that she didn’t need to worry anymore.”(p163) Based on this quote, I can tell that she knew she had to be strong and her Mom’s sickness didn’t make her more sad than she already was, it motivated her to be strong for her mom and whatever was coming up.
During the middle of the story she began to have a change of heart. She started to hang out with her aunt more and realized it takes a lot of effort. During this time of self discovery she noticed small details about her friends and family. But by the end of the book she starts to see things from others views to give her insight to how others might see things.
In the book, Year of Impossible Goodbyes, the main character, Sookan, makes a change in her life by becoming braver. The book shows Sookan becoming brave when her grandfather died and she no longer had anyone to lean on, when she was confronted by her brother to be stronger than she was, and when Sookan lead her and Inchun across the river and over to South Korea. Sookan first becomes braver when her grandfather dies of sickness and old age, whereas Sookan first learns of her past.
