How Does Stephen King Use Nuclear Bombs

Nuclear bombs/war has been around since 1946. In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two bombs hit. The names of these bombs were ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Fat Man’. In the story “Summer Thunder” stephen King Introduces how bombs and radiation from the bombs can affect people. Radiation doesn't just affect people, it affects the whole world. Stephen King contracts death and destruction with the beauty of nature to describe what people do the handle tragedy. Among the few that survived after the nuclear war strikes, Robinson Timlin and gandalf believed most of the people died from radiation poisoning. Gandalf was best friends with both the men. The dog slowly starts to get sick with the symptoms. When he started to die Robinson became really upset. He kept telling himself things like “he just ate a chipmunk” and that he was going to be okay. Robinson has motorcycle that he never got to ride because his wife didn't want him to because she thought it was going to kill him. But now that she is gone, he is going to ride it. He went to town to find a battery, the day after that he got it running. Robinson had to put down Gandalf because the poisoning was so bad that he couldn't even walk. Right after he did that Timlin killed himself. Now robinson is all alone and really depressed. Even if the bomb seems like the only thing that happened in the story, it's not. Gandalf is a huge symbol of happiness. He gave the men hope and happiness. After everyone had died, Robinson took his own life too. He “squeezed the clutch and toed the gear shift down into first”. (494) The nuclear apocalypse shows how two men use their strength, individually and together to survive. Before the bomb they were both miserable. This story shows that you don't need a bunch of people to survive, all you need id the right mindset and try to stay happy. The sickness effects both these men, but it kills them the same way in the
