The novel Hiroshima, by John Hersey, tells the events of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, Japan at the end of World War 2. The bombing occurred on August 6, 1945, and killed or injured the majority of the population. The author tells the story of six of the survivors of the catastrophe. The six include: Hatsuyo Nakamura, Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge, Dr. Masakazu Fujii, Toshiko Sasaki, Dr. Terufumi Sasaki, Dr. Masakazu Fujii, and Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto. Weeks later, the next epidemic strikes Japan, the radiation disease from the nuclear bomb. Since there was no cure at the time, many people suffered endlessly. In this edition, there is a special chapter about the same characters forty years later. Weeds already hid the ashes, and wild flowers were in bloom among the city’s bones. The bomb had not only left the underground organs of the plants intact; it had stimulated them” (69). I liked this quote because it shows that amongst the destruction of the bombing, there is still hope and beauty for the survivors. I learned more about the impacts that the bombing had on the survivors, and the time period. I also learned that the culture of Japan was very different than it is today. I believe the book is historically accurate because Hersey spent years researching and writing drafts about this event. He received a primary source of the events that occurred from the survivors themselves. All the information that was told also matched up with information that I’d read
