The Atomic Bomb As Mandelbaum said that “The nuclear age is the child of both politics and physics. It is, therefore, the product of the two most powerful forces of the modern age - science and nationalism” (8). History shows that the nuclear weapon has power to destroy entire cities within seconds faster than any wars, natural disasters or life threatening diseases (Mandelbaum 1). The first nuclear bomb was tested in July 16th 1945 in New Mexico and the first nuclear bomb was dropped in war on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6th 1945 by United States (Bomb Facts: How Nuclear Weapons are Made). The nuclear bomb killed thousands of people instantly and many died within five years of period due to radiation or after shock (Bomb Facts: How Nuclear Weapons are Made). The invention of nuclear weapons has been exciting for some and tragic for many. The character Charlie Looney gets excited reading that news and makes very prejudice comments. In perspective of Mr. Looney the dropping of the atom bomb on the Japanese is a good thing and they deserved it. He sounds like a normal soldier would feel during the time period, during the war. After all it is World War II he is talking about which last for long time and being soldier the hatred feeling toward japan is normal. But when he makes prejudice comments such as “Well, the goddamn Japs are finished now. The little slant-eyed bastards must be begging us to let them surrender” (Connie 12). He is happy about this because the war is going to end and he can have his old job back as a police officer. He even mentions, “Looks like I’ll be trading in this Coast Guard uniform for my old policeman blues sooner than later”
