Malachi Jackson Mr. Knitter U.S History 8 February 2023 Atomic Bomb Performance Task Atomic Bombs, a weapon of mass destruction were given a bad rep even with their majorly positive contributions to the U.S. outcome in World War II. It's not the bomb that kills people, it's people that kill people. Congress should allow the group of scientists to develop and test this new weapon because the atomic bomb helped the U.S. defeat Japan, stop World War II, and prevent future wars. One of the primary reasons for the utilization of the atomic bomb was to bring an end to the war in Japan as quickly as possible. Japan was a difficult enemy to defeat due to the commitment of its soldiers to fight to the death and resist surrender. In the “Memoirs of General H. H. Arnold, Commander of the American Army Air Force in the Second World War”, Arnold claims that, “The total strength of the Japanese Army was estimated at about 5,000,000 men” (Document B). In the debate “Nuclear Weapons is the best invention ever made”, it is stated that, “The only time that nuclear weapons have ever seriously been used was back in WWII against Japan” (Article 2). The bombs were dropped on two of Japan's major cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which were both centers of military production and transportation. The destruction of these cities had a profound impact on Japan's ability to continue the war, as it disrupted the country's ability to produce weapons and supplies. The bombing also sent a clear message to Japan and the rest of the world that the United States possessed a devastating new weapon and was willing to use it. This served to deter other countries from pursuing nuclear weapons and helped to establish the United States as a dominant military power in the post-war
