The atomic age is the most important event in the 20th century. The atomic age showed other nations how America used technology to produce such power during the war. Although the bombs helped win World War II the disaster after the bombs were launched left the American society distraught, emotional and changed the society culture. America used the Manhattan Engineer District now called the Manhattan Project as a cover to develop an atomic bomb during World War II. In 1941 the Manhattan Project was developed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to control nuclear reaction. “The Manhattan Project moved from theory to practice in 1943. The physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer directed the young scientists at Los Alamos in designing a nuclear-fission bomb” (Goldfield 789). “On July 16, 1945 the first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico now called Ground Zero” (Atomic Bomb Museum).
