How Did America Use The Atomic Bomb During World War II?

The atomic age is the most important event in the 20th century. The atomic age showed other nations how America used technology to produce such power during the war. Although the bombs helped win World War II the disaster after the bombs were launched left the American society distraught, emotional and changed the society culture. America used the Manhattan Engineer District now called the Manhattan Project as a cover to develop an atomic bomb during World War II. In 1941 the Manhattan Project was developed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to control nuclear reaction. “The Manhattan Project moved from theory to practice in 1943. The physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer directed the young scientists at Los Alamos in designing a nuclear-fission bomb” (Goldfield 789). “On July 16, 1945 the first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico now called Ground Zero” (Atomic Bomb Museum). After the major explosion physicists noticed how powerful the bomb was that it could destroy worlds.

The Hiroshima, first bomb was for President Roosevelt, this was a smaller bomb “Little Boy”, weight 8,900 pounds that carried naval guns on the inside. The Nagasaki bomb dropped three days later was for Winston Churchill Prime Minister of England. This bomb was large called “Fat Man”. “This bomb weighed 4.5 tons and carried sixty-four explosive charges in the inner and outer shell” (Atomic Bomb Museum). President Roosevelt died before the bombs were complete, so the new President, Harry S. Truman was responsible for the bombs usage.
