Starting with the basic conduct of traditional style warfare, even though todays battlefield in the middle East is much more of a non-traditional warfare, as tensions rise in areas such North Korea and other countries with a “uniformed military” that we would be fighting, we would take on a much more traditional style of warfare. I would also like to note this novel does a great job of displaying great characteristics of what it takes to be a great leader, such as when Longstreet agrees to attack the Unions flank. He does this because he knows it could shift the battlefield in their favor and will push the enemy in a position where they can bombard the enemy with their artillery fire. However is says it reluctantly due the fact that he knows how reinforced the flanks are and knows he will take heavy loses whether he is successful or not but none the less he agrees and is successful! This novel also does a great job showing how officers are able to carry out the orders that are placed over them by their superiors and they support their superiors on the battlefield thus increasing that unit cohesion we as marines always talk about also.
The plot has very weird twists and endings. While I cannot reveal the ending of the book I can still explain why the author chose to do what he did. The author made references to the Trojan horse. But instead it is a droll wheelbarrow like machine. In my opinion the author did this because the battle wasn’t going anywhere interesting, unless he wanted to write about an entire battle siege which usually lasts hours or even days.
The men battle in the war together and become very close with one another. They need to rely on one another to survive. In chapter three of the novel the general, Himmelstoss, is lost. The soldiers are sad and distraught about the loss of him. Then, a soldier named Tjaden runs over and breaks the news.
Overall, this section of the book, was my favorite part as the references to Greek and Roman culture were exciting to read about. For example, when he discussed things like mixing water and wine or even talking about the symposiums, this became a great interest to me, leaving me wanting to know more about these ancient
This book has given me a greater understanding on the Classics as a whole. The book touches on a plethora of classical topics in chapter 2, and often compares the western civilization to our west. The author also gave me better understanding of the time periods. I didn’t know slaves had better treatment than the free people in Persia at the time, or that war was an enormous role in Classics age. From the western civilization class I’ve took earlier this year, this books discuss the importance of money in a war, when Sparta beat Athens, or when Rome beat the Carthaginians because of the new money they received to build ships.
I think in this story he shows how war alters the soldier’s perceptions of right and wrong, just like telling a war story you do not know if it is truthful or not. I think a good example of soldiers not knowing what was right and wrong was when Rat Kiley was torturing the water buffalo. The torturing of the water buffalo may feel wrong to the reader, but we do not know if it is truly wrong. This story is hard for me as the reader to believe because at the beginning of nearly every section the author says, “This is true” or “It’s all exactly true” or some other variation to prove the stories truthfulness. If a person is always trying to convince you that is something is true I have a hard time believing it actually is.

Men were lying in every conceivable position; the dead lying with their eyes wide open, the wounded begging piteously for help, and some waving their hats and shouting to us to go forward. It all seemed to me a dream; I seemed to be in a sort of haze, when siz, siz, siz, the minnie balls from the Yankee lines began to whistle around our ears”

There are also characters who fail to be heroic, such as the Trojan “vivid and beautiful” prince, Paris. These characters in the Iliad illustrate the qualities that Ancient Greek society values.
The epic poem, The Iliad written by Homer shows the conflicts and events that occurred between the Greeks and Trojans during the Trojan War. Among both sides there are warriors who follow a distinct code, known as the heroic code. This Heroic code helps portray the characteristics of the warriors and their perspective on war. This distinct code is composed of many elements such as arete, acceptance of fate, honour, excellence in war, leadership, courage and power. These traits are shown within the main warriors, Hector and Achilles throughout the epic war poem and helps to guide their decisions.

Among all the episodes of the Trojan War, Homer chooses the moment of Achilles’ wrath and thus creates a poem in which he becomes the central figure. From the Ancient Greeks’ point of view, Achilles represents the ideal of manliness and pure heroism, for he is brave and fights for heroics, not profits. Today, one can agree with this interpretation, yet Achilles is probably the most controversial character because he combines various personality traits and acts in accordance with his ambiguous nature.
