Introduction The children of today are living in a technologically advanced world, and constantly exposed to digital media. Teachers in classrooms throughout the country are struggling with how to use technology in the classroom, as well as how much is beneficial to students. Children are spending more time on tablets and electronic devices than they are playing with toys and each other. Much research has been performed on the effects of technology on the literacy acquisition of young children (Vukelich, 2011). Unfortunately researchers and experts have yet to come to a definitive conclusion on whether the benefits outweigh the risks. The one idea that does seem to be conclusive is that technology is not going anywhere and the brains of children today are becoming wired differently because they live in such a digital age. In many instances, small children figure out how to operate new phones or tablets before their parents do. Parents and educators can use this technology to help young children build upon their literacy skills, but also need to allow time for reading print books and active play as well. Many children spend their entire day on some sort of digital device, and are losing out on valuable interaction and the chance to become critical thinkers and problem solvers. There are great benefits of technology, but it must also be used in moderation to allow children to think on their own, and interact with others. The use of technology in our world is only going to increase with the passing of each year, but our children still need to be able to interact with others and entertain themselves with print books and play. Technology is a great supplement to high quality teaching, but should not be the sole teacher (Hisrich,
