Temperature and pressure depend on ocean depth. The majority of the ocean's energy comes from sunlight. With increasing depth, less and less light is able to penetrate. The lack of light translates into lack of energy and colder temperatures. As depth is increased, the temperature is decreased. In addition, colder water is more dense than warmer water. This difference in density confirms that the coldest water is found at great depths, at the bottom of the ocean (abyssal plain). Warmer temperatures would be found in shallow waters, like the continental shelf.
