Social interaction is largely influenced by its nurturing outside environment, especially television, the internet, and the media. Millions of Americans are heavily dependent on modern technology to the extent where they become distant from one another, from their innate culture. The modern media negatively influences American society and detaches its members from a sense of identity and unity. The 21st century consists of a never-ending digital frontier that seeks to dominate thinking and eventually transform America. With the digital frontier, people are given convenient access to a plethora of information, whether good or bad. According to the Bureau of the Census, published in March 2004, 98.2% of all households in the United States have television sets. The nation as a whole can view whatever is on television, anytime, whether it is a commercial, a newscast, a show, etc. Furthermore, a survey claims that 64% of all adults in the United States own a smartphone. Cover Magazine was accused earlier this year for glorifying anorexia and eating disorders by using an underweight model. The media is prevalent with bloody violence and deviant behavior. Repeated exposure to such creates a more aggressive nature in the viewer. Thus, there is a likelihood to commit violence when having viewed thousands of violent acts through the big screen. Smartphones, when used incorrectly, disconnect the user from the real world, his/her eyes glued to the white screen at all times, diminishing necessary social skills. The “me” counterpart (as explained in Mead’s Theory of Social Behaviorism) is incomplete as a result of insufficient socialization.
