Worldviews Affecting Ponyboy Two groups that are focused on the Outsiders, the Greasers and the Socs, are in conflict throughout the story. They have engaged in fights, runaways, and prison infractions. Ponyboy Curtis, the protagonist of the story, is part of the Greasers and the second youngest of the pack. His perception of the Socs is very unlike others. Pony discovers what the Socs are like, and how they act towards each other as the story progresses. What Ponyboy knows and learns about them really affects how he views the Socs, along with his economic status, and where he lives with his family and friends. The Socs live on the West side, where most of the affluent communities live. The Socs are still a gang nonetheless and are still bound to get into trouble, which for them is easy to shake off with bribery. The Greasers live on the poorer side of town and are frequently in a struggle. This is a problem for the Greasers as they aren’t rich and can’t get away with most situations. Many people would judge the Greasers before they even knew them. Word is more likely to get out to other communities, and people would soon have prejudices against the Greasers. The Greasers do try to behave most of the time and appear to be more humble and less spoiled than the Socs. Because of the death of their parents in a car accident, Ponyboy, his brothers Darry, and Sodapop live alone. Darry is the oldest and can support the family with his job as a roofer.
