When reading “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman many readers interpret the short story differently. Readers may find the story to be confusing and perhaps disturbing. It was written in June 1890. This story is about a woman who is considered depressed after having a baby. She gets trapped in a room by her husband to cope with her “depression.” She is not supposed to write or do anything but sleep. The woman began seeing herself and other women in the yellow wallpaper. She felt as if she was now trapped within the wallpaper and did not want to leave the room anymore. When reading “The Yellow Wallpaper” gender criticism is considered throughout it. The woman was trapped completely in the room she had to use too. Her husband didn’t listen, he just wanted to be right but he wasn’t. In the story the gender criticism put onto the woman caused her to go insane. There are many ways to analyze it with gender criticism.
