The town believes this because, all the birds do is make music and don’t harm anybody. Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are both symbolized by the mockingbird. Boo can be symbolized for two reasons. The first reason is Boo doesn’t bother anyone. As stated early the mockingbird doesn’t harm anybody and neither does Boo. Boo stays inside and never really comes out. The only time he came out was to save Jem from Mr. Ewell. The second reason why Boo is symbolized as the mockingbird because there was rumors and stories about about him. No one really knew if these were true so, Boo got something he didn't deserve. That ties in with the belief that you shouldn’t shoot a mockingbird because, that would be doing something the bird that they don’t deserve. Tom Robinson can be also be symbolized as the mockingbird for two reasons as well. The first reason why is Tom Robinson is an innocent man. He went on trial for a crime he never committed. The verdict ended up being guilty and he had to go to jail. The final reason why Tom Robinson can be symbolized as the mockingbird is because, he was in fact shot. He was shot 12 times by a jail guard. They killed Tom because he was climbing up the fence to try and get away. The reader can conclude that Tom didn’t deserve to be shot 12 times. That also ties in with the belief that you shouldn’t shoot a mockingbird because, that would be doing something the bird doesn't deserve.
