He cleverly directs the hateful attention towards the judges instead, as his cunningful diction implies that the decision the court had made was unappealing to those who supported the review of Maryland’s gun control law. Altogether, Barnes writes effectively enough to strongly and clearly exude his message to his readers, and with a compelling conclusion, he leaves open for his audience the opportunity to create their own thoughts and take action to what they believe
The author’s methodology first includes a discussion of the issue at hand leading to a synopsis of why this problem even originated. Additionally, the author presents information on how other people in the field perceive the issue and who is to “blame” through the use of quotes. For example, Mark Rosenberg, the founder of the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control argues that it was the leadership of the CDC who prevented further research on gun violence. On the other hand, another primary speaker, current Injury Center Director Debra Houry has been thought to have defended the agency’s decision by saying it still partakes in data collection of firearm research. After discussing the CDC and the need for it to address an issue like this, the NRA’s influence on the organization is explained.
Patrick said “N.R.A.spending on lobbying outranked spending by gun control groups by a factor of ten to one” for the 2012 elections. With all that money in politics there were no new gun legislation passed. Patrick describes a cycle whenever there is a public tragedy what precedes is massive scale arms sale from a possible new regulations from arms that never comes to fruition. The writer bring up the fact that in many stores such as c.v.s you can openly buy arms with small to no regulation. Patrick proclaimed there are approximately 300 million guns in the us alone .The
The NRA's fight against gun control did not stop here, instead they continued their push further. In 1975, the Institute for Legislative Action was formed as a branch of the NRA that would help elect pro-second amendment candidates and support pro-second amendment litigation in federal and state courts. The article, "The NRA Has Been Outstandingly Successful Where it Really Counts," by Walter Hickey discusses how the NRA-ILA have been able to implement right to carry and other pro-gun laws in states that would not be expected to allow such laws to be passed. Hickey writes that although the ILA works both at the state and federal level they are most successful at the state level having "had at least 230 full legislative victories on the state level in the past ten years alone…" (Hickey).
On December 14th, 2012, the lives of thousands, and indirectly millions changed after the shooting of twenty children and six teachers were fatally shot by the infamous Sandy Hook Elementary school shooter, Adam Lanza. This event was so dramatic and sickening the world stopped in it’s tracks waiting for what was going to happen next. In the aftermath of the tragedy, the cauldron was stirred and the underlying question resurfaced; What should we do about gun control laws? Should the people of America even have guns? After a number of shootings occurring and Sandy Hook occurring, Barrack Obama addressed the event and spoke about “reducing gun violence” and promoting “gun safety” drawing many citizens to support his cause.
“The lobbying arm of the NRA” was established as members believed that, in order to protect their right to bear arms, they had to directly impact decision-making in Washington (NRA-ILA n.d.). Due to the contemporary debate of whether the number of gun regulations should increase, the Institute has retained the media’s spotlight since 2008 because of their prominent public influence, especially during the former presidency of Barack
Through this book, I agreed with most of his points, but a few I didn’t. A hunter and political activist, Nugent's statements to gun ownership and politics increased his success in the 1990s (Nugent Biography Para. 7). To American citizens,
Despite starting off by stating that he himself is an member of the NRA (national rifle association) he is often seen to have a negative outlook towards the organization but in the end the viewer comes to terms to a fact that Michel Moore not “anti-shooter” in the sense of wanting to outlaw all firearms in the country but can be seen as a concerned citizen who is just outraged by all the violence and mayhem that has been caused due to the so called gun culture that is prevalent in the united states . Moore tries to examine what is so different about the U.S. that might account for this. He brushes aside the often told theory that the United States possesses a more violent history than other lands but he points out the genocides and atrocities performed in t by Germany, Japan, Britain and France. He isn’t convinced by the theory of the family background since divorces in Britain are much more frequent. He reasons that a probable reason appears to be that most of these states have much stricter gun control laws, so that lower gun violence is simply a consequence
While Novak does not necessarily appear to support any side of the gun control argument, he does imply that Republicans have largely derailed efforts to enforce the law regarding gun violence cases. The writer’s main purpose for writing the article is to show that there is a different way of looking at the gun control debate and to also show the wrongs, in his opinion, that are committed by the interested parties in this debate. Novak takes the risk of appearing subjective in his article which can make him appear less professional. As a journalist, he is supposed to appear
The PBS program “Gunned Down: The power of the NRA” highlighted how the NRA continues it’s stranglehold on the government and gun policies. It is quite clear that gun control advocates attempt to play off the emotion of citizens whereas pro gun advocates fear the public into believing the government is attempting to steal their guns and liberties. The side of the gun control advocates can be seen through the likes of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. Conversely, the pro gun effort is shown through Ringleader Wayne LaPierre who continues to save the NRA and second amendment rights. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were both portrayed as compassionate, caring individuals that were fighting for a life or
The AP “Gov.” class at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is familiar with the debate; before they were even born, the big money - gun debate had already been in full swing. Discussions leading to debates on the local, county, state and federal level about gun control, highlighting the influence wrought by big money had many voices, but little impact on either issue. One voice can engage the public and bring forth change; that voice is Emma Gonzalez. On a day reserved for flowers, candy, sentiments of love and affection, the actions of one person changed lives and the day forever; from those actions were born a resolve and a voice.
In 1637 about 100 Massachusetts Bay colonists were ordered to surrender their “guns, pistols, swords, powder, shot & match”, said Barbara Mantel. In 1813, Kentucky and Louisiana became the first states to ban the carrying of concealed weapons. In 1986, the NRA scored a victory when President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Firearm Owners ' Protection Act. Currently about six states must have insurance on their gun. “Insurance will cover you if your home burns down in an electrical fire, but it will not cover you if you burn down your own house, and you cannot insure yourself for arson,” said Robert P. Hartwig, Garen Wintemute had some very good points to back up his belief.
Many people have been losing loved ones and going through heart breaks that they shouldn’t have to go through, all because of a gun or should I say a gunman. Lately it has been out of control and people are starting to notice that someone needs to get it under control before it’s too late. That’s why Obama came up with the gun control law hoping it will decrease the number of deaths. Barack Obama angrily says “Once again innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun". On January 16, 2013 Obama presents a gun control act.
The fight for gun control has been a never-ending battle in recent years amongst the Republican and Democratic Party. How the media portrays gun control has a lot to do with how people view guns and the gun laws at hand; for example, CNN and Fox news are best known for having completely different views and reporting styles. In a CNN article titled “NRA chief accuses Democrats of pushing ‘socialist’ agenda in the wake of the Florida shooting” written by Lauren Fox it discusses the tension between the NRA and Democrats when it comes to gun control. (Fox, 2018)
This paper also provides an interesting solution to gun violence; instead of already proven ineffective gun control laws, these authors suggest looking at why these laws are ineffective. Planty, Michael, and Jennifer
