How Harmful Is Rock Music Junk Food?

Have you ever been in a heated discussion about music and its values? If not it’s clear to see by reading a couple of articles about music that it is a touchy subject. Some may believe that music is “junk food,” that over time has actually become worse and the fact that music shaming is back in style.
First, some may say that rock music is “Junk Food” for the soul, but some would also clash with that statement. According to Alan Bloom in his article “Music” he state that “McDonald’s now has more employees than U.S. Steel, and likewise the purveyors of junk food for the soul have supplanted what still seems to be more basic callings.” (253) Bloom aphorism is that rock music is just like the fast food down the street from us. According to Fiona MaCrae in her article “All the songs DO sound the same: Modern pop is louder, less varied, and uses less chords than classic albums of 50s and 60s,” MaCrae states that “Research shows that modern recordings are louder than those of those of the 1950s and 60s. They are also blander, with less variety in terms of chords and melodies.” No matter the music you listen to, the artist is just being lazy. There is no genuine art in music or backbreaking work according to MaCrae. Although Ann Powers from the blog “Why We Fight About Pop Music?” would disagree and say that “This is a moment of great empowerment for music lovers.” Powers believes that there are plenty of great opportunities for music now.
