Veronica Roth is the author of the well-known ‘Divergent’ series, which is aimed at young adults. Not only has this book been a best seller among book shelves internationally, but has recently been made into a motion picture film as well. This book has impacted my life in an overwhelmingly positive effect, and through it, I have acquired traits of courage, resilience and self-love which has only come to be because of this novel. Such themes include the search for true identity, attempt to eradicate fear within our lives, fallouts with family members, mutual relations bring people together, choices and consequences as well as self- power that is hidden within us. One of the main protagonists, Tris, has had the biggest impact on my life, when I had trouble finding my true identity. I was torn between continuing an image of what people perceived me to be, and that of what my heart wanted to be. Throughout the novel, Tris makes mistakes, but one thing she does not do, is turn on the choices she made. Both Tris and the other main protagonist, Four, undergo several experiences that make them face their fears. Now, a lot of people are faced with constant fear every day, me included. Endless anxiety of never living up to others expectations, speaking up for myself or even starting conservation are all examples of several fears that I have the task of battling with daily. Although Tris and Four aren’t faced with similar fears to me, they still face them with the help of each other as well as hidden bravery inside of them. The new outlook of fear that Divergent has opened me to, has allowed me to stop focusing on the constant replaying of situations of the past that cannot be reversed. We must learn to control our fear before we give it the power to control us, because it is then it really starts affecting our lives.
