The Film Citizen Kane was a groundbreaking film in the 1940’s, the way Orson Wells depicts his film with different lighting, cinematography, choice of camera shots and mise-en-scene throughout this movie truly showed the masterpiece that this film is. In the Film Citizen Kane, it was the first movie that went against true Hollywood cinema by introducing flashbacks throughout the movie to show us how Charles Foster Kane changes throughout the movie. Throughout this movie the audience can see how Charles Foster Kane undergoes a variety of physical and emotional changes from when he was just a young boy all the way until his unfortunate death. Power, that’s all that Kane wanted in the start of the film. In the beginning of the film Kane gets ownership of the struggling New York Daily Inquirer, Kane suggests that he wanted to use journalism to apply to the public and protect the interest of ordinary people.
The Hollywood studio system changed dramatically during the 1950’s. Hollywood saw the emergence of a new platform of entertainment, which negatively affected sales, film production and society as a whole. Film studios no longer controlled which movies were seen or where people saw them due to the Superior Court ruling U.S. vs. Paramount Picture Inc. The invention of the television brought much change to the America and the American film experience.
Soon after during the early 1930’s, the Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation released the first three-color Technicolor technology. This color process needed a unique type of camera that was able to split the image into three different sections of the film. Filters that were red, blue, and green were used to position the light to the matching filter, once the recording was done the different strips were then combined and developed into a solo color strip that was played through a projector. This latest invention of color introduced a whole new aspect in the world of filmmaking. The filmmaker/filmmakers could than provide more information to the audience about the whereabouts and the setting of a scene with the use of color.
Many Americans enjoyed the new films because they provided joy and laughter after the recent war. Most of the films during this time were silent with some background music like a piano accompanying them, but it wasn’t until 1923 when the first movie with an actual soundtrack was produced (“1920s films”). Movie ticket sales went from 50 weekly in 1920 to 90 million weekly in 1929 (“digital history”). New movies were coming out and each was more advanced than the last with new movie stars and ideas influencing the fashion and culture of America. The American people became obsessed with movies and attending the theater became a regular weekend thing to do (Hanson).
Sound is being used to create or sense the mood for the audience. For example, when Kim’s father is outside, diegetic sound is used so the characters hear the baseball game playing in the background which makes the situation exciting for the audience. Edward finishes trimming a bush (the dinosaur) and everyone is amazed. This can appear to create a dramatic and happy effect for the audience. The sound then crescendos to make it seem as if Edward is being cheered on by the crowd.
Sound is very important in this film because of lot of sound is edited to fit in certain spots including music. During the activist movement, we can clearly hear the hurt in these people voices. Riots, shouting and clapping were all heard in most of the shots along with a voice in the background explaining exactly what is going on. Music was edited into some of the scenes to help give more of a scary or haunted approach. There was also sounds that were in scenes which sounded like someone or something huge is about to take place.
Sound affects how the viewer perceives the reality created in a film. There are many tactics the sound designer can implement for the director to completely change how the visuals of a scene are interpreted or to enhance the interpretation that already exists due to visuals alone. The sound editor and sound designers for films use tools such as dialogue, loudness, pitch, narration, music, and silence to influence the perception of the audience. Even in the silent film era, musical accompaniment played an integral part of the mood created by the movie. Sounds are integral to establishing the audience’s perception of a film’s world.
Thomas Edison was one of many inventors that tried to add music and speech to films. The year 1927 marked the end of silent film. Engineers at Western Electric came up with the vitaphone, with the backing of Warner Bros. Studio. Soon subtitles were replaced with sound. Movies advanced one way by adding a multiperson camera and lighting crew in 1927.
