In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus must choose between saving his best friend’s life, or turning against him to side with the conspirators who want to save Rome from tyranny. The Tragedy of Julius Caesar takes place in ancient Rome after Pompey’s rule and when Caesar is in power. The main plotline of the play is the conspirators plotting to kill Caesar and the aftermath of them killing Caesar. Brutus is shown as a tragic hero in this play. A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his own destruction. Brutus is considered a tragic hero in Julius Caesar because he faces a serious decision, there is supernatural involvement in his life, and he learns something from his mistake. Brutus faces a serious decision; he must decide whether or not to join the conspiracy. Brutus is good friends with Caesar but now he must decide whether to be a loyal friend or listen to Cassius and betray Caesar for what he thinks is best for Rome. A text example from act II scene ii line eleven quotes “I know no personal spurn against him” (Shakespeare 869). Brutus joined the conspiracy with the thought that he would be saving Rome from a potentially dangerous tyrant. Later on, he realized that Caesar was a great ruler and that Rome did not benefit from his death. In act V scene i lines 56-57 Brutus says “Caesar, thou canst not die by traitors’ hands, unless thou bring’st them with thee” (Shakespeare 949). This line shows how Brutus realizes and acknowledges his mistake of killing Caesar and calls himself a traitor while talking to Octavius. Brutus wants Caesar to kill him also.
