At the beginning of the novel, Charlie went to high school with no friends and feeling more alone than ever because all his old friends started hanging out with new people. At a school football game Charlie went by himself because he did not have any friends to go with, Patrick saw Charlie by himself at the game and even though he didn’t know him well he invited Charlie to come to sit with him and his sister Sam. They both introduced themselves to Charlie and told him to take a seat.

“They both told me to have a seat, and they both seemed to mean it, so I took a seat.”

This quote shows that Charlie never really felt that people meant it when they wanted to talk to him or become friends with him, and even though Charlie didn’t know Patrick or Sam well and they didn’t know him well, he felt wanted.
Charlie quickly became friends with Patrick and Sam, they were always inviting him to hang out and they beyond doubt cared and looked out for Charlie. Charlie was invited to a Christmas party at Patrick and Sam’s house, Sam and Charlie were talking about how he had not had his first kiss yet.
