Courage is being afraid of something, but having the bravery to go against it. Jem Finch started his life off not really understanding this true meaning. He saw courage as doing something no one else would do, like running up to Boo Radley’s house and hitting the wall. Throughout the novel, he learned that this was only childish, and true bravery is harder to come by. Atticus helps show him the real meaning through examples that happen in their lives, and Jem begins to grow up. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee Jem learns the lesson of true courage through many impactful experiences, and he learns that courage is standing up, being selfless, and doing something even though you’re afraid of it. Atticus was a lawyer, and was called upon to defend Tom Robinson, who had been blamed for the rape of Mayella Ewell. Nevertheless, in the end Atticus lost due to discrimination, he stood up for what he believed was right, and that moment was important for Jem. Although the Ewells still wanted to get back at Atticus, they were no longer afraid. They figured he got what he wanted, but they were wrong. Bob Ewell planned on killing Scout and Jem, if it was the last thing he would do. Stomp. Jem and Scout were walking home one night after a talent show when they heard something creeping along behind them. Crunch. At first they thought it was their imagination, or someone trying to pull a prank, but they started becoming frightened. When Bob lunged at Scout, Jem showed courage by attempting to protect his sister from harm, even when he could’ve escaped: “ There came a crunching sound and Jem screamed… he slowly squeezed the breath out of me… Suddenly he was jerked backwards and flung on the ground… I thought, Jem’s up” (262). Harper Lee doesn’t make it clear if it was Boo or Jem, but either way, Jem protected his sister as long as he had been conscious. He saved his sister’s life, he protected his family over himself even when fear coursed through his veins. Courage permits one to face extreme dangers and difficulties without fear, and this is what both Mrs. Dubose and Jem did. The lesson of courage was shown to Jem, and occured when a dangerous situation came along; Courage saved his sister and saved himself. They could have died, but instead he fought against his fear, and this showed that he finally understood what true courage really
