Every individual goes through experiences that scares or enlightens them; the same occurs in the fantasy world of Mr.Riggs which is the home of the peculiars. These children are different from average people yet still goes through life the same way, they learn who they are through their relationships and life experiences. Emma is an example of this thought, she has lived for hundreds of years and has had close encounters and losses. She has also pushed through obstacles and has survived through all of the hardships; which shows that her personality and identity differs greatly from the other peculiar children. The tragedies along with the triumphs of Emma 's past shape her identity and who she is as a person now. Emma has experienced and survived horrible situations, one includes losing Victor to the wights. Throughout the story the reader learns of the horrible deeds done by wights. Ever since Abe left the peculiar children to fight in the war Emma is sensitive to when anyone mentions him. When Jacob first arrives he is almost killed by Emma, she denies him being who he is, Abe’s grandson, then she becomes furious and almost kills him, (131, Riggs). Emma shows that she gets very sensitive to the subject of Abe since she wants to immediately hurt Jacob just for saying that he is his grandson. Later the same subject of her being sensitive is shown when she uncontrollably cries when she finds out about Abe’s fate. Jacob is brought back to the home and tells Miss Peregrine of the news, what they do not know is that Emma is hiding and learns of the news also, once the news is broken she runs out crying (152, Riggs).
