Teenagers have dramatically evolved throughout the twentieth century. As they have changed, so have their attitudes. In the story, Among the Mourners, the protagonist Aurora, is seen as selfish and rude. She’s also shown as rather rebellious for her age. So where does she fit in? The early 1900s? The Late 80s? Or maybe even the 2000s?

The early years of the 1900s were all related in some ways. The 1900s were a time where there was no real difference between the enjoyable youth of childhood and the overwhelming stress of adulthood. Teenagers were practically adults, and would often work full hours and get married, just like older people. Some these marriages were arranged, usually with the spouse being much older than the teenager. Although marriages like these existed, they became less common when the 1900s arrived. The story was written in 1995, so it might have been written in that timeframe. Firstly, Aurora’s surroundings such as her attitude and the advancement of her character through the story both show that she has the freedom to mostly do whatever she pleases. Her parents didn’t exactly lecture her on her behavior, either. In the story, there was a moment where her father becomes angry with her for being inconsiderate towards the poet who had killed himself. Instead of punishing or scolding her on her behavior, her father called Aurora’s mother in to handle it. Another point was when Aurora was invited to stay at Giorgio’s house, she called her mother who agreed to the ordeal. Aurora said in the story that her mother had been so wrapped up in the funeral so much that she had said yes, therefore, when Aurora arrived at her home to get her clothes, she claimed that she was scared of even grabbing her toothbrush.
