Did you know that only 5% of friendships last after high school? In the story Of Mice and Men, friendship is portrayed in a few different ways. Such as the friendship between George and Lennie, the friendship between Candy and his old dog, and the friendship between George, Lennie and Candy. Firstly, the friendship between George and Lennie. This friendship is one that they have had since they were kids, meaning they have a pretty strong friendship and they are honestly close enough to play a brother role in each other's friendship. They travel together, which is uncommon for this time, and George has to look out for Lennie because Lennie has autism. In the text it states, “I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Also, at the end of the story George has to make the decision to kill Lennie so that Lennie won't be brutally punished for killing Candy's wife, which is very hard to do to someone that you care about. Next, the friendship between Candy and his old dog. This friendship is also a lifelong friendship, as Candy got the dog when he was just a puppy. This appeared to be Candys only “real” friend and he kept Candy from getting lonely or depressed. Once his dog was old, so was Candy. So much so that he couldn't really help out much around the ranch. His dog, on the other hand, was very old and he was nearing death, eventually the other members of the ranch convinced him to let the dog go. In the text it says, “Look, Candy”. This dog just suffers all the time. If you were to take him out and shoot him right in the back of the head.” This evidence shows that the dog was struggling towards the end of his life and dying would help him. Candy, even having no other real friends, no purpose at the ranch, and having the dog since he was just a little puppy, still decided to let the dog go so that he wouldn't suffer anymore; which displays true
