Hotel Rwanda directed by Terry George and released in 2004, is one of the films that most accurately depict the reality of the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. This genocide marks one of the most bloody and abrupt in the history of genocides where the Tutsi began slaughtering the Hutu. The story is told through the main character Paul Rusesabagina’s heroic acts as a hotel manager and his dedication to his family and people. The story centers on him and his family sheltering Hutu refugees at the Mille Colline Hotel in Kigali, resisting the Tutsi rebels as they began the massacre of Hutu families almost overnight. The film clearly portrays how and why the genocide began and it is through this that theoretical concepts such as ethnic violence and ethno-political mobilization can be drawn.
Genocide is a term that is used to describe violence against members of a national, ethnical, racial or religious group with the intent to destroy the entire group. This word came into use only after World War II, when one of the most infamous genocides had happened, the “Holocaust.” When the genocide of 1972 in Burundi had happened, it was due to the ethnic tensions which had risen over the years. Tutsi and the Hutu tension had begun due to Belgium’s favoritism with the Tutsi and the European influence.
Rwanda is a small african country with many unique things we don’t know about them. First off, the Hutus were known as farmers and the pastoralist called themselves Tutsi. In the movie Hotel Rwanda, there are many people in the film who chose one of two paths dealing with the conflict between the Hutus and the Tutsi’s. The perfect example of a man that helped his Tutsi’s neighbors and later on ends up saving hundred/ thousands of Tutsi’s lives, was a Paul the house manager, a Hutu. Another example is Tatiana ,Paul wife, a Tutsi, who has too much of a good heart to let her people die. She pushes Paul to help her save her friends and neighbors. Pat, a white woman who helped orphan children, bought 10 Tutsi children to Paul to help keep them save.
Within the movie Hotel Rwanda, Paul Rusesabagina a successful hotel manager in central Africa, risking his life while trying to keep his people safe from the ongoing civil war. Originally the Hutu and the Tutsi ethnic groups put aside their differences to work together but since 1860’s the Tutsi tribe gained power and overthrew the peace treaty. Tatiana and their children are Tutsi which leaves Paul in a very uncomfortable situation, making decisions for his family as well as the people he's trying to protect. Armed forces of Rwanda supported the Hutu resistance movement against the Rwandan Patriotic front made up of mostly Tutsi refugees. The impact the genocide had on the people of Rwanda was tremendous, the people were tortured and terrorized as they witnessed their loved ones being killed.

To begin, from April to July 1994, members of the Hutu ethnic group in the East-Central African nation murdered 800,000 men, women, and children from the Tutsi ethnic group. The genocide was an after affect of the scramble for Africa by European countries who help no regard for the people who already lived their. In the scramble for Africa many European countries raced to make claims on land in Africa that was already lived on by natives, they mistreated the natives and killed and enslaved many of them. This was prevalent in Rwanda when the belgians imperialized the land. The belgians sent the Hutus who were the majority of the population into slavery and lead to mass deaths of their people. But they lead the land through another ethnic group the tutsis who made up about 15% of the population compared to the 85% population of Hutus.

The film explores the tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi peoples, that lead to a civil war in Rwanda, where corruption and bribes between politicians are routine. The political situation in the country worsens following when the Tutsi’s shot down the plane that was carry the President.
