War is full of tragedy and terrible events that has been taking place for as long as we can remember. Authors include the use of literary devices in their writing to emphasize the protest of war. An author's goal is to persuade the reader to agree with their side of the argument. In writing authors commonly use Imagery, Irony and structure to demonstrate how in their writing war is being protested. Imagery is commonly used in many writing pieces and poems. Irony is when someone says one thing but it is almost the total opposite to what it really means. In Stephen Crane's “War is Kind”, Irony is being used in the title. Crane is protesting war by naming the title “War is Kind” when the selection is nothing about war being kind, the selection is really about the terrors and tribulations of war. The passage states “These men were born to drill and die. The unexplained glory flies above them, great is the battle god, great, and his kingdom- a field where thousands of corpse lie.” This excerpt shows Crane protesting war by naming the title “War is Kind” when this clearly shows that war is not kind. Soldiers are even wishing to die than to continue on in battle. Another selection with Irony is Wilfred Owen's “Dulce et Decorum est”. In latin the title means It is sweet and right which is suppose to reference to the selection. The selection depicts the Irony of war by describing war in vivid detail and showing that war is not sweet or right. To protest war, included in the passage “ Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues…” this is a perfect representation of irony and how to protest war by saying something totally different than what the selection was supposed to be about.
