Many people have been to war and it has affected them in many ways. These effects can influence people to write and protest against war. This is way to stop war from happening and these writings help them with the effects of war. The writings that they use include poetry or books, and in these books and poetry there is imagery, irony and structure. Therefore, writers protest war using imagery, irony, and structure. Imagery is commonly used by all writers to express what the author wants you to see, feel, taste or smell. Writers that protest war use it to show what the battlefield is actually like and to show you what happens when the war is going on and the decisions they have to make. Structure in writings is not always so easy to spot in a writing, but it is there and it plays a big part in protesting against war. For example, in the book “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, the narrator says, “Among the necessities or near-necessities were P-38 can openers, pocket knives, heat tabs, wristwatches, dog tags…”. All of these things were carried, and then some, by soldiers in the Vietnam War and this shows how structure is used to protest war. This type of structure is called listing, and listing in this sort of writing shows how much they had to carry into battle, to try and survive. This shows that a much as you carry into war you may not always win, protesting war saying that you can never prepare for war because war is the hardest thing to prepare for. Also in the poetry called “War is Kind” by Stephen Crane, the narrator says, “War is kind”, multiple times throughout the poetry. Repetition in this poetry is a type of structure used to try and get you to remember something. The author is trying to get you to remember that “War is kind”, when it actually is not. In the piece of poetry after the narrator says a things that happen in war that are not kind and that actually happen it proves that war is not kind. The author uses repetition to show that war is not kind by giving you images that are not kind before he say it. Which shows that authors use structure to protest about
