When children are put in a environment with no adult supervision they believe that there will be no consequences for their actions and act on their bad decisions. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the themes are always changing and are best suited with the current situation the boys find themselves in. Jack, Ralph, and Simon are three of the main characters, and always find themselves having to deal with a new problem day by day on the island. Jack is a very easy character to describe, his name having the meaning “to seize by force”. Throughout the book in multiple situations you find that Jack can easily be described as the antagonist. From the beginning of the book when the boys first decide who will be leader, Jack was desperately trying to get the position. He loves and craves the feeling of being in charge. Jack takes action and gathers all the choir boys and goes hunting for food. As the boys are looking through the woods them come upon a small pig. Jack pulls out a knife and right before he about to kill it he hesitates and the pig gets away. To many of the boys that action showed them that Jack is week and isn't brave enough to kill the pig, Jack makes multiple excuses so he wouldn't look weak. “I was going to, I was choosing a place. Next time—!” As the book progresses Jack starts to love hunting and is becoming a “savage”. He starts to wear face paint and runs around with sharp objects like his knife and a spear. During a heated moment between the boys Jack decides to speak and shout out that he wants to have another vote for who should be leader. “Who thinks Ralph oughtn’t to be chief?” The boys remain silent and Jack starts to cry showing another sign of weakness, but Jack never gives up until he has what he wants, and what he wants is power over all the other
