A chameleon blends into its surroundings, just like Miss Maudie Atkinson in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Scout, a young six-year-old girl, and Jem, her older brother, are living in Maycomb County during the Great Depression. Atticus, Scout’s father who is a well-respected lawyer, is defending a black person named Tom Robinson. The negro is charged with rape accusations from whites. Scout and her family receive a lot of negative comments about this trial. Throughout the novel, Scout gets advice from one of her neighbors, Miss Maudie. Miss Maudie has known Scout’s family for years, and the young girl really looks up to her. Miss Maudie is a role model for Scout that is necessary in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Miss Maudie was often seen in the garden wearing men’s overalls. However, Miss Maudie is a Baptist, and some Baptists believe that it is against the Bible to spend time outside for pleasure. They told her that she would go to hell unless she read the Bible and stopped gardening. Miss Maudie ignored them and kept on watering her flowers and working on her garden. Through this action, Miss Maudie demonstrates to Scout to stand up for herself if she truly believes in what she is doing. Miss Maudie also teaches Scout that it is important to not let anyone bring her down. Another example of Miss Maudie standing up to others is when she is at the Missionary Circle meeting. Miss Merriweather, a neighbor, was talking bad about Atticus, and how he defended the black Tom Robinson. Miss Maudie contradicts Miss Merriweather and becomes angry. The chameleon lady stood up for Atticus and all of the others who believe in racial equality, including herself. She teaches Scout to stand up for what is right.
