The interpretation of a Hero is exclusive for every individual; however there are several foundations on which a preponderance can comply on. The foundation of basic traits within a heroic tale exemplify traits such as leadership, humility, chutzpah, benevolence, and courage. The aspirant shows egotism, displays cruelty or deceitful trickery, or departs from an impregnable foe he is no longer considered an aspiring hero. Furthermore, a candidate must benefit the society as a whole, instead of the individual. These traits were an important aspect of Homeric culture, but they were paramount to a Hero. All these traits that shown within the widely recognized Odysseus as a hero...or have had you been misled?

Odysseus courageously leads his crew across the uncharted land that eventually leads to an inhabited cave, which they believe to be an abode for a Polyphemus. Odysseus and his crew then burglarize the Cyclops belongings. This act conclusively enrages the dweller of the cave, in which Odysseus devises a plan of trickery in which he'll be able to return to his native ship.

Although this Homeric tale could collide with some commentators as
Homer the infamous archetypal hero might ultimately be the antagonist. While many have regarded Polyphemus as the villain of the story there's a pitiful prayer his beloved sheep, who are soon to be devoured by Odysseus and his crew. He caresses each wooly back of his sheep as they retire from the cave, and it is difficult not to pity him while he gives unique attention to his lead ram. Homer addresses, " That stroking him gently, powerful Polyphemus murmured,/ 'Dear old ram, what last of the flock to quit the cave?"" The juxtaposition of "gently" and "powerful" and the poetically stated question illustrate that, despite his monstrous and ill temper, Polyphemus is tenderhearted. This attributes the all more so endearing tenderness of his ignorance- for he is wholly unaware of Odysseus cunning
