Within Greek mythology, Pandora was the first mortal woman to ever be created. Pandora was given to Epimetheus, the brother of Prometheus, as a punishment to Prometheus and mankind. Although he had been warned not to accept any gifts from the gods, Epimetheus took Pandora as his wife. Upon their wedding day, Zeus presented Pandora with a beautiful box that was not to be opened. Unfortunately, Pandora’s curiosity led her to open the box, unleashing all evil into the world. However, after all the evil had escaped, Hope came out of Pandora’s box to help cure the misfortune of the world. This story is one that is well-known throughout the world and has been passed down for ages.Nonetheless, the story of Pandora teaches us many important lessons that can still be applied to our lives today.
One of the lessons that Pandora’s story teaches us is to follow what you have been told to avoid unintended consequences. In the story, Prometheus warns his brother, Epimetheus, not to accept any gifts given to him by the gods. However, Epimetheus decides to ignore this warning when he takes Pandora as his wife. Pandora was gifted her curiosity by Hera, which was a gift that ended up leading to the doom of humanity. In this case, Pandora followed her curious tendencies when she was gifted the box by Zeus. Although curiosity can lead to innovation or break-throughs, this case proved that there can be a negative side as well. Instead of following what she was told, Pandora allowed for her curiosity to take over, and ended up taking down humanity with her.
