James Esposito The shared theme coming from the story “Pandora's box” retold by Louis Untermeyer, and the story “Coyote Steals the Sun and Moon” retold By Richard Erdoes and Alfonzo Ortiz is being too curious can ruin anything you aspire to accomplish. There is evidence coming from both of these short myths that back up this information relating to the theme. For the first short story Pandora's box, it is evident where this claim can tie back in with what was within the text of the story. In this story, the whole idea of it was for the curiosity of Pandora to ruin and punish the brother of Prometheus who stole the fire of Olympus. In this particular story, the Coyote and the Eagle teamed up to hunt more efficiently and get as much food as possible. In their time hunting, The Coyote and the Eagle came to the agreement that there was not enough light for them to comfortably hunt. They came to the conclusion that they needed the sun and the moon to brighten the world up when they were attempting to catch food. In their relentless pursuit of light, they stumbled across a Native American village where the people within the village invited the Coyote and the Eagle to join them while they watched people do sacred dances. In this time they were spending with the Native American peoples, Coyote found two boxes. The purpose of these two boxes was for them to be used when the Native Americans wanted light. This was because the boxes contained the sun and the moon. Once both the Coyote and the Eagle recognized this they began debating on which way to obtain the box. They figured stealing it would be the best way because of the fact that the Native Americans would not just lend something that was so useful to them. So, the Eagle and the Coyote waited and waited until the Native Americans finished their sacred dances and went to sleep. This is when they stole the boxes and began to flee the area. In their time running away, Coyote spent a very large amount of time attempting to manipulate the Eagle into letting him carry the boxes. After a long back and forth, the Eagle eventually gave in and let the Coyote carry the boxes for a bit of time. The second Coyote the Eagle soared over a large mountain, he took that as his opportunity to get a sneak peak on what was inside. Coyote thought that Eagle did not let him carry the boxes because there was something extra inside that the Eagle wanted for himself so he opened it to find out.
