The media we consume as kids plays an important role in shaping who we are and how we view the world as we grow older. One media company that has an impact on almost every child around the world with its various movies, toys, and theme parks is the Walt Disney Company. As a result, Disney has started to create more movies, especially princess movies, that represent more diverse cultures because their young audience comes from many different parts of the world. However, they have received a lot of backlash on how they choose to incorporate more diverse cultures into their movies. If Disney really cared about featuring more underrepresented people of color, they would’ve continued doing so after the release of the live-action version of The Little Mermaid. Disney will need to consistently feature underrepresented races in important character roles and in their movie production teams for many of their future movies in order to be considered doing an adequate job. Audiences can help foster an environment where there is more race representation in Disney Princess movies and in the media in general by calling out media companies and holding them accountable for creating media that features people of many different races. This can be done by encouraging audiences to educate themselves to learn more about different cultures so audiences can detect when media companies fail to portray certain cultures accurately. By continuing to point out when media companies mess up with their representation, there can hopefully be a day where these companies start listening to their audiences and taking their constructive criticism into consideration to improve race representation in their future pieces of
