1285 Words6 Pages

The character Roger, from the beginning of Lord of the Flies, was described as a weird character. He is a secretive boy that like to hide behind people and observe other’s actions, he is also one of the hunters that guards the castle rock fortress. Roger is equally cruel as Jack, they think the same and Roger is always on Jack’s side. Even before he became savage, Roger was a dictator and extremely rude, kicking down sand castles and throwing sand at others. He also has many faults that one would dislike him for. One of the being that he is a very destructive boy, such as when he suggested to make a bow and spin an arrow to make a fire, A regular ten year old wouldn't know how to do that. Roger acts this way because he has secrets that if he …show more content…

He starts killing and tormenting pigs in ways that you wouldn't ever believe in, unforgettable ways. In the novel, it was quoted that “All at once, Robert was screaming and struggling with the strength of frenzy. Behind him was Roger, fighting to get close. The chant rose ritually, as at the last moment of a dance or hunt.”(Golding Pg.114) Roger is vicious in doing this, he just wants to watch the hunters try to kill Robert, nothing more nothing less. He isn't even trying to help and stop them. If they weren't all going crazy someone would've told them to put him down or stop them from injuring him badly. One word the basically sums Roger all up is sadistic, he likes to bring pain to others and watching them suffer without any mercy or forgiveness. Another quote that’s showing us that he’s demented is ….”Roger found a lodgment for his point and began to push till he was leaning with his whole weight. The spear moved forward inch by inch and the terrified squealing became a high-pitched scream.”....(Golding Pg.135) He just poked a pig in places that are uncomfortable for anyone to see or even do. This is showing us that when he sees something to kill, he sees nothing but torture and goes insane and crazy. Roger is becoming more of a killer and a psychopath, which isn't really good if you're stranded on an unknown island. Roger is the kind of person that you wouldn't …show more content…

He acted the same as always, tortuous and inhumane, and don't forget childish at times. For example in the book it quoted that “Roger became the pig, grunting and charging at Jack, who sidestepped. The hunters took their spears, the cooks took spits, and the rest clubs of firewood. A circling movement developed and a chant.” (Golding Pg.151) Only a child would do something of that nature, run around like a pig and play around with the hunters. Don't forget that some the hunters take it extremely seriously when someone acts like a pig, the boys might kill someone for real, like they were about to do to Robert. The boys have forgotten that they are on a remote island and are in need of as many helping hands as they can get. I also read that…”High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever.” and …”The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.”(Golding Pg.180) Roger did this intentionally, he put all of his weight against the boulder, knowing that Piggy was under it. After Piggy was dead and gone, he had no forgiveness for himself or for what he did. He just wanted Piggy terminated, because he got vexed from him with his silly conch shell turns. Everyone made fun of Piggy because he was fat and smart, they were essentially
