He tried to cover up his past life by giving them a false name. “ Jay Gatz - that was really, or at least legally his name” (75). This shows that Gatsby lied about his name and told them something totally different to make other people think otherwise about his name. “ The idea was that they were lying to someone that they could potentially deceive” ( The lying game). It also shows that Gatsby can somewhat not be trusted because if he will lie about his name he would lie about anything else.
Gatsby lies about his name and hides his past as James Gatz, and in the end proves himself to be untrustworthy. In fact, he doesn’t even seem to care when he is caught lying. After Tom reveals him for selling alcohol over the counter,
Gatsby was a farmboy from North Dakota, who never should have made it to such a high social and economic class status as he did. He went to Oxford, but only for five months after his military program (Fitzgerald 129). Gatsby began to reinvent himself when he partnered with Dan Cody. His parents were poor and he was embarrassed to be from such a poor background, so he changed his life’s story after Mr.Cody gave him his name (Fitzgerald 98). 1. I believe that the most crucial part of chapter 1 is the fact that Nick is setting the scene in a since. Nick tells the reader about advice that his father give to him. Nick tells us about his cousin whom he is there to see in New York and her, not so good husband. Also we start to see a glimpse into this mysterious world that Gatsby and Nick’s other acquaintances in New York, live in.

This fact is also highlighted by the fact that Gatsby is not even his real name. He was born James Gatz, and changed his name to reinvent himself.

Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby is quite a controversial character. A millionaire living in West Egg, Gatsby lives a lavish lifestyle and everything in his life is easily attainable, or so it seems. Many would believe that he is living the American Dream of luxury and happiness, but hiding behind his wealth and mansion is an entirely different Gatsby.
