The Epic Hero Odysseus In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows determination and curiosity which demonstrates that he is an epic hero. Odysseus shows that he is determined to get home when he says, “ I grew sick with fear but presently I gave command to my officers” (Homer 388). He shows that he is determined to get home when he could leave The Land Of The Dead but he needs to talk to Tiresias. Accomplishing this task makes Odysseus heroic because he will do what it took for his men and himself to get home.

As the first and greatest poets, this indeed is a huge responsibility because everyone is relying on what words he might use or not to enlighten the society. Ancient Greece transforming in civilized manners around the Greek period, we do anticipate a form of power to rule without fear. And so Homer may have decided to portray Odysseus as a hero who was also arrogant and self-serving like you said.
In Homer’s book, The Odyssey, the question has been raised as to whether or not Odysseus is considered a hero. In today’s society, a hero is someone who is brave and courageous. Heroes also typically give their life a purpose whether it is sacrificing their life to help others or doing something kind for someone. However, it does take more than these traits to consider oneself a hero. A hero is someone who is willing to ask for help and someone who is intelligent, brave and loyal.
