The Odyssey is an epic hero poem about Odysseus, a Greek hero that has been stuck on multiple different islands and thresholds to make it back to his home, Ithaca. For example, at the beginning of the poem, Odysseus is being held at the Island of Calypso by Poseidon. Poseidon is angry at Odysseus for stabbing his son, Polyphemus the Cyclops, in the eye. While leaving the Cicones Island, Odysseus and his men landed in a mysterious place. When the scouts that Odysseus sent on inland did not come back Odysseus went out to find news about them. When he found his men they were under the spell of the lotus plant and he had to drag them back to the ship and lash them under their bench. As the first and greatest poets, this indeed is a huge responsibility because everyone is relying on what words he might use or not to enlighten the society. Ancient Greece transforming in civilized manners around the Greek period, we do anticipate a form of power to rule without fear. And so Homer may have decided to portray Odysseus as a hero who was also arrogant and self-serving like you said.
