There are many heroes in many stories but not a single one compares to how the epic hero Odysseus. The Odyssey is by the famous poet Homer is a fiction story about a king who is coming back from War and the quest back takes 20 years. Odysseus is an epic hero because he has done many heroic acts and his Larger than Life quality is his intelligence. Many people share the argument that Odysseus is not a hero but there's parts of the story that make me disagree. The part is when Odysseus and his men get trapped in the Cyclops cave and Odysseus has to use his larger than life quality to save them.
“A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom.” (Bob Dylan). A modern hero is recognized by the goodness in their heart. Odysseus, the protagonist of Homer’s “The Odyssey”, is not a good example of a modern hero. Heroes cannot be cross cultural, and Odysseus’ heroics do not transcend time and apply to the modern world.

Also comparable to a modern hero, Odysseus portrays human qualities throughout the highs and lows of his journey, such as sadness when he learns that his mother had died during his time away. An epic hero has traits such as supernatural help, quests, challenges, help from companions, learning, growth, and fatal flaws. An epic hero is defined as “a brave and noble character in an epic poem, admired for great achievements or affected by grand events”. One well known epic hero is Odysseus from Homer’s epic poem, the Odyssey. Although he is well known and often used as an example of an epic hero, Odysseus is far from a perfect epic hero. He often fails to protect his crew from harm and returns home without them. Odysseus’ behavior and lack of control over himself and the crew result in the crew being put into difficult situations that could have been avoided had Odysseus controlled them better. In The Odyssey, Homer uses characters who must face various difficult challenges to expose Odysseus’ poor leadership skills, arrogance and inquisitiveness.
In the book Odyssey Odysseus is portrayed as epic hero manly. To me he is an epic hero and there are many things in the book to back this claim up. How he is portrayed is he is intelligent, wise, and brave. He has accomplished many journeys of a total of twenty years, some of these journeys may not be big but they impact his life. An epic hero is not just about strength it’s about the mind and how well he or she can use it.
In The Odyssey, Odysseus’ characteristics do not fit in the definition of a modern hero, he illustrates a naive and a arrogant epic hero. Odysseus can be seen as a naive epic hero. This is because he doesn't step up to be a stern leader with his shipmates and he allows his shipmates to walk over him. An example of this is when Odysseus reaches Thrinacia, the island home to Helio’s cattles. Odysseus tells his

No matter what is thrown at him he never stops trying to get home, getting past a Cyclopes, the Lady Circe, and sirens. He even gets through the Underworld and lives. Despite this, Odysseus does have faults about him, though not as many as there are qualities. He is a worldwide symbol, an archetype, of both nobility and bravery. Odysseus, the epic hero of the Odyssey, a great leader with many attributes as well as flaws, is no ordinary man.
