How were the bathrooms in ancient Rome designed differently from today's bathrooms? How are bathrooms used differently compared to nowadays? Were the bathrooms more sanitary back then or are they more sanitary now? These are all very interesting questions that might shock you. Back in the ancient Roman times bathrooms were a completely different concept, compared to the bathrooms today. For that reason, they had an open room so the people could talk and do their business at the same time. The bathrooms at that time were also unisex, so both genders would communicate together while using the bathroom. Now the bathrooms are made to privately go in and out with no socialization. They are also made for specific genders now and are not unisex anymore. How the sanitation of the ancient Rome bathrooms is different from today's bathrooms. In ancient Rome, the bathrooms were nasty and extremely unsanitary, because they were poorly maintained. They were also used differently at that time. Nowadays we use toilet paper, but at that time they used a stick with a sponge on the end of it called a “tersorium”, to wipe (Nash). Many people used the tersorium, which made it very unsanitary, and also different from today’s bathrooms. It is crazy to see how bathrooms have changed throughout time in different ways.
