Introduction

This progress report will be over how funding resources like the math lab will have positive benefits on IUS students. This will cover the research that I have conducted between September 17th and November 18th, my final proposal will be finished on December 3rd. The goal of this project so shows IUS administration that it is in their best interest to invest more resources into student success. It also focuses on making sure that students are prepared for the upcoming influx of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) jobs. I plan on proposing that in order to reduce stress on students and math lab employees by giving them more help during peak times. We are America, we have always strived at being the very best in everything, yet we are listed as 27th in the world when it comes to mathematics test scores. Though this is not localized solely to IUS, I believe that we can begin to make a change. To make education better suited to all students and to give our students every opportunity to succeed. Secondary education is no longer for the most elite among us, we need to be able to compete alongside other first world countries on a global scale. I hope that she will be able to give an in-depth look on how her students tend to do when they go to the math lab in comparison to those that do not take advantage of the resources available to them. I also plan to track down Robert Veith who is a full-time math lab employee, I feel as if he will be able to give me a standpoint on whether or not he feels the same stress as the students and if he believes that allowing more tutors would be beneficial.
Advertising the Math Lab
I still need to find ways that the math lab can be promoted and how students can be encouraged to take advantage of it. I believe that offering a few extra credit points would be a wonderfully positive way to get more students into the math lab. This would require a united front from the math department but those points can go a long way, especially for students that will benefit the most from supplemental instruction. We could offer special study sessions during finals week, so we can show more students the benefits that they can receive during the semester. Increasing the number of flyers around campus that advertise the benefits, as well as the proper location could really help get the idea of going to the math lab in more students heads. Currently, all the flyers have had the directions “North” and “South” crossed out and they have been replaced
